The Airedale Terrier, also known as "The King of Terriers" is the largest of all terrier breeds. His greater size embodies equally large devotion and courage while still being one of the calmest and most eager to please.
Originating in the Valley of Aire in England, we suspect he is a cross between the Old English Terrier, the Otterhound and other various Terriers, creating a hearty dog that quickly earned the title "Jack of All Trades".
Airedales are a medium sized, sturdy dog with an attractive, hard, wiry coat. A detailed description of his physical characteristics may be found in the breed standard under "Your Airedale" on this website.
An Airedale enjoys being near his family and loves activity. Plentiful exercise in a safe area is very important. He can adjust to many environments and living situations. He has a jolly, friendly personality and although he will not back down if challenged, he is not generally a troublemaker and should get along nicely with other dogs. When he barks, there is usually a reason.
Grooming an Airedale three or four times a year, in addition to regular weekly brushing and combing will keep him looking great and provide an opportunity to make sure he is healthy and in proper weight. Regular grooming also reduces shedding and may possibly allow some people with allergies to own one. Consult with your breeder about the best options for his grooming should be done at the time he goes home with you.
Raising an Airedale puppy requires serious commitment. You must be willing to monitor and socialize an active puppy, take him to puppy or kindergarten class, devote time to grooming on a regular basis, provide a safe exercise area, and most of all, agree to share your home with your Airedale. Socialization, consistency, exercise, love, praise and devotion are necessary. Your breeder should be available to answer questions and help avoid problems. Contact him/her as soon as you perceive a problem, not after one has gotten out of hand. Your dedication will be rewarded with a cherished family member as well as the best companion you and your family could ever have!
